The Gillespie County Historical Society (GCHS) was charted in 1935 as stewards of the newly built Vereins Kirche Museum. Over the last eighty-six years, the GCHS has continued its care of the Vereins Kirche, while also adding the 3.5-acre Pioneer Museum complex; the Schandua House; the Marschall-Meusebach Cemetery, and most recently, interpretation at the Old Gillespie County Jail. This was the highlight of our trip to Fredericksburg this spring. It featured a short video about the trials and tribulations the first settlers went through to settle here. Several historical structures and lots of original artifacts throughout the collection show how life in the early days of Texas flourished.
Amazing experience into Texas past and the history of how immigrants forged our Nation.
Educational and well curated exhibits and buildings showing how German settlers found a home in central Texas in the 1800s. It's easy to forget how other cultures have influenced our past and present- and continue to shape our future.
Being of German descent I found this museum particularly interesting. We were greeted by a very nice women with lots of information. Loved the way the buildings were displayed with lots of period items. Stop by and enjoy the walk around and you'll learn a bit about the times.
This place has a senior and military discount. Even without the discount it is 12 dollars per. They play a 12 minutes video every 15 minutes or so in one of the building. They have all different buildings you can go look into. It was a great time for me and was worth every single minutes. I don't want to spoil(?) too much of it but all I'll say is it was educational and fun! I'm not really a big museum guy but this one was pretty good and I definitely had a good time.
